Bently Nevada 32000 Metric Proximity Probe Housing Assemblies

The 32000 is Bently Nevada’s metric proximity probe housing assembly – the hardware that lets a 3300 XL probe pass through a machine casing so you can set the gap and change the probe without breaking the machine open. Here is how to decode the order number correctly.

TL;DR: The Bently Nevada 32000 series is the metric half of the “31000 and 32000 Proximity Probe Housing Assemblies” family (datasheet 141610). A housing lets a 3300 XL proximity probe pass through a machine casing so the air gap can be set – and the probe replaced – without opening the machine; the typical use is radial vibration and Keyphasor. 31000 is the inch version, 32000 the metric version: identical construction, different threads, fittings and units. Order codes run 32000-AA-BB-CC-DDD-EE-FF, and the two positions that catch people out are E (fittings assume an armoured cable) and F (mounting thread). TenBN stocks a range of built-to-order assemblies; availability is at the bottom of the page.

Also worth settling before you read on: “32000/16” is not a model. There is no slash notation in this family – 16 is the A-position code for the probe option inside 32000-16-..., and the same assembly line can carry 28 or 29 in that position.

What a 32000 housing does

A proximity probe measures a gap; to do that on a running machine it has to look through the casing. Bolting the probe straight into a bracket gives you a sealed hole you cannot adjust without a shutdown, so the housing assembly provides the missing piece: a sleeve that holds the probe at a set depth, a locking arrangement that survives vibration, and a gland that keeps machine oil out and the probe’s cable seal intact – while still letting you unlock, slide the probe, re-set the gap and lock it again.

The housing is not just mechanical. Its inner sleeve is the reference surface the probe is calibrated against, which is why Bently Nevada specifies conductive-filled PPS for the housing body rather than plain plastic, and why mixing non-XL components into the assembly silently degrades the whole system to non-XL accuracy.

Decoding 32000-AA-BB-CC-DDD-EE-FF

A – probe 16 = 3300 XL 8 mm probe with connector; 29 = same probe with connector protector. Other A codes in 141610’s ordering table cover additional probe options – do not guess one
B – probe cable length 00, 05 or 10 only. 05 = 0.5 m (20 in) integral cable
C – standoff adapter Metric increments of 10 mm; 00 = none, 04 = 40 mm up to 20 = 200 mm
D – probe insertion depth 1 mm increments, from 25 mm to 760 mm. 080 = the probe enters 80 mm
E – fittings and plugs 03 = two plugs plus one M20 fitting plus a cable-seal gland, intended for armoured probe cable; 07 = one PG21xM20 fitting plus two plugs
F – mounting thread 01 = M24x3; 02 = 3/4-14 NPT; 00 = no outer sleeve. Mandatory whenever C is not 00

Worked example, from a real order code: 32000-16-05-00-080-03-02 is a metric housing with an 8 mm XL probe, 0.5 m of integral probe cable, no standoff, 80 mm of insertion, armoured-cable fittings and a 3/4-14 NPT mounting thread. And 32000-29-05-10-075-07-02 is the same idea with a connector protector, a 100 mm standoff, 75 mm insertion and PG21xM20 fittings.

Two traps in that example are worth repeating. First, A=16 specifies a non-armoured probe while E=03 provides fittings intended for armoured cable – that combination is orderable but usually not what anyone meant, so check it before you commit. Second, C and D are constrained by B: with B=05, C + D must stay at or below 394 mm, and if you need the probe cable’s part-number and serial-number labels to remain outside the sleeve, C + D must be under 64 mm. Where C + D exceeds 305 mm, add part 37948-01 – a probe support and oil seal that prevents the long probe from resonating.

Materials and ratings

Housing body Glass-fibre reinforced PPS with conductive fibres (EN 50014 static dissipation)
Sleeve AISI 304 stainless
Outer sleeve and exposed screws AISI 303 stainless
O-rings Neoprene (sleeve-to-housing); tip pressure-differential seal uses Viton
Probe armour AISI 302/304 with FEP insulation
Enclosure rating CSA certified NEMA 4X and IP66 (water spray)
Explosion protection Not explosion-proof – use CA21000 / CA24701 barrier assemblies (datasheet 141600)
Probe / cable temperature Standard 8 mm probe and cable -52 to +177 °C; ETR tip +218 °C with cable and connector to +260 °C
Proximitor temperature -52 to +100 °C operating, +105 °C storage
Housing-documented probe range 8 mm and 11 mm probes -51 to +177 °C; NSv working -34 to +177 °C
Minimum cable bend radius 25.4 mm

Note what is not in the datasheet: no order-code position selects housing material, because the housing material is fixed; and PEEK, 316SS housings and installation clearances for wrench access are not offered. 316 stainless appears only on conduit fitting options (03818100, 03818101, 03818102, 03818105).

31000 versus 32000: what actually changes

Probe thread 3/8-24 UNF (31000) against M10x1 (32000)
Mounting thread options 05 = 7/8-14 UNF 2A against 01 = M24x3; both can take 02 = 3/4-14 NPT
Fittings 3/4-14 NPT against M25 / M20 / PG11 / PG21xM20
C and D increments 0.5 in and 0.1 in against 10 mm and 1 mm
Spare sleeve 108883 against 108882
Standoff 109319 (1-3/8 in across flats) against 109318 (35 mm wrench)
Plugs 104968-01 / -02
Sleeve length formula constant +025 against +063

Installation and torque

Set the gap with the machine shut down and cold, then lock it. The figures that matter, straight from 141610:

Probe into housing Recommended 11.2 N·m; maximum 33.9 N·m. On the first three threads: recommended 7.5 N·m, maximum 22.6 N·m
Housing locknut Recommended 29.4 N·m
Plug nuts 0.5 N·m
Connector Maximum 0.565 N·m; the two-prong connector is finger-tight

Housings are not pressure-tested at the factory, so a seal that weeps on first commissioning is not a manufacturing finding you can simply return. Two environment limits deserve more attention than they usually get: temperatures below -34 °C can cause the tip pressure seal to fail early, and sustained hot service is progressive – roughly a week is tolerable in 95 °C water or condensate, but longer exposure drives housing strength down to about half its value inside six to eight weeks. Chemical attack on the tip from high or low pH also produces leakage, and leakage is not covered by the in-service replacement plan. If your application is axial dual-probe rather than radial, that is a different part – use 21022 per datasheet 141601.

Pairing it with the rest of the 3300 XL system

A housing is one third of a measurement. The complete proximity system is probe + extension cable + Proximitor preamplifier, and the three lengths have to add up to the system length: 1, 5 or 9 m total, with a 1 m system needing no extension cable at all, and a 5 m probe only ever paired with a 5 m Proximitor. For the 8 mm metric family that means probes 330103/330104 (M10x1), reverse-flow 330105/330106, extension cables 330130 (standard) or 330190 (ETR), and preamplifier 330180-AA-BB where the A position carries the system length and mounting (10/11/12 = 1 m panel, DIN, no hardware; 50/51/52 = 5 m; 90/91/92 = 9 m) and B carries certification. A common and expensive mistake is ordering 330730 as an 8 mm extension cable – 330730 belongs to the 11 mm system.

Accuracy is a system property, not a component property. Bently Nevada states that only a complete set of XL components guarantees XL accuracy and interchangeability without per-unit bench calibration; mix in any non-XL part and the assembly reverts to non-XL specifications. Assemblies are calibrated against AISI 4140 target material by default, so a different target alloy needs to be specified at order time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 31000 and 32000?

Units of measure, nothing else. 31000 is the inch-version proximity probe housing and 32000 is the metric version; they share the same construction and materials and differ in probe thread (3/8-24 UNF versus M10x1), mounting thread, conduit fittings, and the length increments used by code positions C and D. Spare sleeves and standoffs also carry different part numbers.

Is there such a thing as a 32000/16 module?

No. 32000 housings use a dotted order code, 32000-AA-BB-CC-DDD-EE-FF, not the slash notation used for rack modules like the 3500/15. The “16” people search for is the A-position code meaning a 3300 XL 8 mm probe with connector is fitted inside the housing, so the full number you want looks like 32000-16-05-00-080-03-02.

What does the D position mean?

How far the probe extends into the machine, in millimetres, in 1 mm increments from 25 mm up to 760 mm. It is combined with the C position, the standoff adapter, to set total reach – and the pair is constrained: with a 0.5 m integral probe cable (B = 05) the sum of C and D must stay at or below 394 mm.

Can I order a 32000 housing without a probe?

The housing itself can be ordered as hardware, and spare sleeves (108882 metric) and standoffs (109318) are catalogued separately. What you cannot do is pick the housing material – no code position selects it, because the body is fixed at glass-fibre reinforced conductive PPS with a 304 stainless sleeve.

How tight should I install a proximity probe in its housing?

11.2 N·m is the recommended torque for threading the probe into the housing, with 33.9 N·m as the absolute maximum, and only 7.5 N·m recommended across the first three threads. The housing locknut takes 29.4 N·m and the plug nuts just 0.5 N·m. Over-torquing the probe is a common way to crack a housing that would otherwise have sealed correctly.

Is a 32000 housing suitable in a classified hazardous area?

The housing is CSA-certified NEMA 4X and IP66 and meets EN 50014 for static dissipation, but it is not explosion-proof on its own. For classified installations use the barrier assemblies – CA21000 or CA24701, documented separately in datasheet 141600.

My probe housing leaks. Is that a warranty item?

Usually not, and it is worth understanding why before you order a replacement. Housings are not pressure-tested at the factory, and the documented failure routes are chemical attack on the tip from high or low pH, cold below -34 °C degrading the tip pressure seal prematurely, and sustained hot condensate or water exposure, where about a week at 95 °C is acceptable but longer exposure roughly halves housing strength within six to eight weeks. Leakage is not covered by the in-service replacement plan.

Do 32000 housings work with any proximity probe?

They are designed around the 3300 XL family – the 8 mm probes in particular – and the total probe plus extension cable plus Proximitor length must equal a system length of 1, 5 or 9 m. Only complete XL component sets preserve XL accuracy and interchangeability; introduce a non-XL part and the whole system reverts to non-XL specifications and needs bench calibration.

Build the right assembly

Send us the machine layout or the old part’s full order code, and we will check the C + D constraint, the armoured-versus-non-armoured E and A pairing, and the mounting thread before anything is quoted. Where a housing turns out to be the wrong answer – long reach, axial dual-probe, or a classified area – we will say so. Prices are provided on enquiry and are not published on this site.
